How to Survive a Hunt

Everything you need to know to survive ghost hunts in Phasmophobia. Preparation, hiding spots, incense usage, and ghost-specific tips.

Before the Hunt - Preparation

Survival starts long before the lights flicker. Prepare yourself as soon as you arrive on the map.

Know your hiding spots
As soon as you enter, locate closets, lockers, and small tents. Memorize at least 2 hiding spots between your position and the ghost room.
Keep Incense ready
Always keep a lightable incense stick in your inventory. It is your best emergency survival tool.
Conserve sprint
Do not sprint unnecessarily. You have 3 seconds of sprint (3.0 m/s) with a 5-second cooldown. Save it for emergencies.
Strategic equipment
Don't carry too much active electronics. Every powered-on device can betray you during a hunt (the ghost detects active devices).

When a Hunt Starts

Recognizing the signs immediately is crucial. Every second counts.

SIGNS OF A HUNT
Lights flicker erratically, exit doors lock, and the activity monitor in the truck shows 10.
GRACE PERIOD
You have a grace period before the ghost can kill you: roughly 2 to 5 seconds depending on difficulty (shorter on higher difficulty). Use this time to run to a hiding spot.
Immediate reaction
Run immediately to the nearest hiding spot. Do not waste time picking up equipment.

Hiding

Hiding is your best chance of survival. But you have to do it correctly.

Closets and lockers
The ghost cannot enter, but it CAN force them open if it detects you inside. Stay silent and turn everything off.
CHECKLIST
1. Turn off flashlight 2. Turn off ALL electronics in hand 3. Do not use voice chat (ghost hears at 9m, Yokai at 2.5m) 4. Hold the door shut if the ghost approaches 5. Do not peek out - the ghost has 360-degree vision

Using Incense During a Hunt

Incense is your best survival tool mid-hunt. Here is how it works.

EFFECT
Blinds the ghost for 5 seconds. The ghost enters a wandering phase, giving you time to escape.
RANGE BY TIER

T2

T3

Moroi - Blinded for 7.5 seconds instead of 5 (50% longer).

Ghost-Specific Survival Tips

Some ghosts require specific strategies. Knowing these exceptions can save your life.

Deogen DO NOT HIDE

The Deogen ALWAYS knows your exact location. Do not hide. Instead, loop around furniture - it slows to 0.4 m/s near you, making it easy to outmaneuver by looping.

Revenant HIDE IMMEDIATELY

VERY fast at 3.0 m/s when chasing. Do not try to outrun it. Hide immediately as soon as the hunt starts. When it cannot see you, it drops to 1.0 m/s.

Banshee SINGLE TARGET

The Banshee only targets one player. If you are not the target, you are safe during the hunt. The ghost completely ignores non-targets.

Yokai VOICE SAFE AT DISTANCE

The Yokai can only hear players at 2.5m instead of 9m. Voice is safe at distance - but if you are close, it will detect you very quickly.

Phantom PHOTO = VANISH

Taking a photo of the Phantom during a hunt makes it temporarily disappear. The hunt continues, but it becomes invisible longer between flickers.

Moroi SMUDGE 50% LONGER

Incense blinds the Moroi for 7.5 seconds instead of 5. Use this advantage if you suspect it. Warning: it is also faster at low team sanity.

If You Cannot Hide

Sometimes there is no hiding spot nearby. Here are your emergency options.

Incense - Use it to buy 5 seconds of blindness and run.
Sprint - 3.0 m/s for 3 seconds, 5-second cooldown. Use it to create distance.
Loop around furniture - Large furniture (tables, kitchen islands) breaks the ghost's line of sight. Loop to stay alive.
Change floors - The ghost can only detect you from a different floor via direct line of sight. Go up or down stairs.
