Beginner's Guide

Everything you need to know to get started in Phasmophobia. From basic equipment to identifying your first ghost.

1. The Objective

Phasmophobia is a cooperative horror game (1 to 4 players). Your team enters a haunted location with one main objective: identify the ghost type among the 27 that exist.

To identify the ghost, you need to find 3 evidences out of 7 possible using your equipment. Each ghost has a unique combination of 3 evidences.

Use the Evidence Eliminator on the homepage to quickly identify your ghost by selecting the evidences you found.

2. The 7 Evidences

EMF Level 5
EMF Reader

Spirit Box
Spirit Box
The ghost responds to your questions through the Spirit Box. Lights off required.
Ultraviolet
UV Light
Fingerprints or handprints appear under UV light on doors, windows, or switches.
Ghost Orb
Video Camera
A small glowing orb visible only through the video camera from the truck.

3. Essential Equipment

Your budget is limited. Here are the priority tools for a beginner:

Essential
Flashlight
You won't see anything without it. Turn it off during hunts.
Evidence
EMF Reader
Detects ghost interactions (levels 1-5). Level 5 = evidence.
Evidence
Spirit Box
Ask questions to the ghost. Lights off, sometimes alone in the room.
Evidence + tracking
Thermometer
Find the ghost room (coldest) and detect freezing.
Evidence
Video Camera
Place it in the ghost room. Watch from the truck for orbs.
Survival
Incense
Blinds the ghost for 5 seconds during a hunt. Your best survival tool.

4. How to Investigate

  1. Find the ghost room - Use the thermometer to find the coldest room. The EMF reader also reacts near the ghost.
  2. Place your equipment - Video camera, writing book, and D.O.T.S. projector in the ghost room.
  3. Collect evidence - Check each tool. Return to the truck to monitor the camera and sensors.
  4. Identify the ghost - With 3 evidences, use the Evidence Eliminator to find the ghost. Write your answer in the journal.

5. Sanity

Your sanity starts at 100% and drops in the dark, during ghost events, and when you see the ghost. When the team's average sanity drops below 50%, the ghost can start hunting.

RECOVER
Lights on, sanity medication
DRAIN
Darkness, events, seeing the ghost

6. Hunts

When the ghost hunts, lights flicker, the entrance door locks, and the ghost chases you. You have a few seconds (grace period) to hide.

DO
  • Hide in a closet/locker
  • Turn off your flashlight
  • Don't use voice chat
  • Use incense if needed
DON'T
  • Don't run without direction
  • Don't keep your flashlight on
  • Don't stay in a hallway
  • Don't head to the truck too late

7. Beginner Tips

  1. Start on Amateur - Amateur difficulty gives more setup time, a longer grace period, and hunts are shorter.
  2. Spot hiding spots early - When entering the location, note where closets and lockers are. You'll panic-search otherwise.
  3. Always bring incense - It's your life insurance. One incense can save the whole team during a hunt.
  4. Thermometer first - Find the ghost room quickly. Everything is easier when you know where it is.
  5. Play as a team - Split roles: one in the truck, others inside. Communicate via radio.
  6. Don't panic - Most deaths happen because players panic and run into the ghost instead of hiding calmly.
